Family Holiday Traditions...The Tacky Christmas

The holiday season is the favorite time of year for me and my family.  For us it begins not at Thanksgiving, but in September, after my daughters birthday.  It is at that point I start to hear the "suggestions" on what they want for a Thanksgiving dinner and the early ideas for Christmas gifts so desperately needed.  Once we have celebrated and eaten ourselves into a food coma on Thanksgiving, watched football and taken a nap, then comes the ideas for Christmas.  Like most others we pull out the Christmas decorations, not to decorate the outside of our home but to decorate the inside.  We have all the trimmings, miles and miles of lights, garland, stockings for the fireplace and the all important tree.  This is where we differ from most households, I like to think of us as the Charlie Brown family, because we always get the tree that does not stand straight and tall, we go for the ones that lean or that are just a little off.  We have had the tree that leaned back, we have had the Michael Jackson tree, it leaned forward and we have had the one that leaned to the right.  Don't fret at no time did we have an incident where the trees have fallen they just leaned.  One lesson we did learn from our leaning trees is you have to decorate them with a little more flair.  What does that mean you ask.... first you have to get all the items needed, 6-8 boxes of mini lights, garland in the selected colors, ornaments and last but not least the all important 10 boxes of icicles, and the angel on top,  it is only then you are ready to decorate a leaning tree.  From there it is like decorating any other tree, lights and angel first, then garland, then ornaments, and then the icicles.  When do you know when you have done it right? when you can only see icicles, lights and ornaments, and the tree disappears in the sparkly.  You are not done yet, you have to then decorate the inside of the house and you will need an additional 6-8 boxes of mini lights, just depending on what size room and hallway you are decorating.  Now put the lights up all around the circumference of the room, windows and down the hallway, there should be so many lights you can turn off all the regular lights in the house and still have enough illumination to read a book.  Then you can sit and admire your handy work for awhile and enjoy. Once you do all this you can honestly say, in your best Mater voice from Cars, I have achieved Christmas Tacky.  Hold your head tall and let you inner child shine and enjoy the decorations and the Christmas holiday. I can say with certainty that there will not be one person, including yourself, that walks into your home and does not put a  smile on their face. You have now reached Tacky Christmas perfection.
Take this time to enjoy your family and friends and have a wonderful Holiday season.
